June Monthly Meeting

“Change” in America’s Health Care System
(A Federal Legislative Update)

Thursday, June 4, 2009

Speaker: Megan Mamarella, NAHU, Director of State Affairs

Health care reform is currently the top domestic priority of both the Obama Administration and Congress. An aggressive timeline has been set and comprehensive health reform legislation could be signed into law by the end of summer. With such a complex health care system that affects every single American, the discussions are heated and detailed in Washington, D.C. As issues such as cost containment, individual mandate, public buy-in program and connector, among others, come up in the media headlines each day, insurance producers need to be equipped with the information from the on-going discussions of how they and their clients will be impacted by the implementation of reforms. In this presentation, I will break down the major players (Senators, Congressmen, HHS, White House Officials) and what specific reforms they are proposing. Further, I will detail each proposal’s pros and cons and the how it will impact the current marketplace.

Key Learnings and Session Objectives:
After this presentation, participants will have a better understanding of the political process relative to health care reform as well as basic knowledge on key policy reform proposals currently being debated by Congress and the Obama Administration. The participants will walk away with an analysis of pros and cons to each major reform issue.
