Mary Brainerd

President & CEO, HealthPartners

Mary Brainerd is president and chief executive officer for HealthPartners, a family of nonprofit Minnesota health care organizations headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has been with the organization since 1992.

As president and CEO, Ms. Brainerd leads one of the largest health care organizations in the country. The HealthPartners (www.healthpartners.com) family of health care companies serves more than one million medical and dental health plan members nationwide and is the largest consumer-governed, nonprofit health care organization in the nation.

Ms. Brainerd’s honors include receiving the KPMG Role Model for the Advancement of Worn en as Business and Community Leaders Award (2008); being named Executive of the Year (2007); Most Influential Women in Business (1999, 2002) by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal; the Medal of Distinction from the College of St. Catherine; the University of St. Thomas Award for Ethical Leadership (2002); recognized as one of the top 25 women in healthcare by Modern Healthcare (2005); the Jean Harris Award from the Women’s Health Leadership Trust (2005); and Century College’s Women of Distinction Award (2006).

Mardy Brodil
Senior Product Consultant, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota
Mardy Brodil, CEBS, Sr. Product Consultant. Mardy has been with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota since January 1989 primarily focused on the personal spending account/medical banking business. Mardy has deep experience at selling spending accounts (FSAs, HRAs, MSAs and HSAs), life and disability products across all market segments including individual, small, mid-market and major/national market segments. The most recent three years is in product development focusing on enhancing our CDHP product portfolio. Mardy is a graduate of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Julie Bunde
Director, Product Management, HealthPartners
Julie Bunde is HealthPartners’ Director of Product Management, responsible for developing and managing HealthPartners’ group and individual commercial plans. Julie has led the development of HealthPartners’ Empower suite of consumer directed health plans and consumer cost tools over the past several years.

HealthPartners is a family of nonprofit Minnesota health care organizations focused on improving the health of its members, its patients and the community. HealthPartners and its related organizations provide health care services, insurance and HMO coverage to more than one million medical and dental members in Minnesota and nationwide. HealthPartners is the top rated plan in Minnesota according to eValue8/National Business Coalition on Health.

Julie has 20 years of healthcare experience and has served the HealthPartners organization in a variety of Finance, Business Development and Product Development roles since 1990. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a B.A. in Economics, and an MBA from Metro State University.

Kevin Counihan
Chief Marketing Officer, Massachusetts Connector Health Plan
Kevin Counihan is Chief Marketing Officer of the Commonwealth of MA Health Connector Authority where he is responsible for sales and marketing activities.

Kevin has been in the health insurance and employee benefits business for over 25 years, serving in a variety of positions including underwriting, finance, marketing, sales, and operations. He was Senior Vice President for Sales, Marketing, & Member Services for Tufts Health Plan and previously was Vice President of Sales for CIGNA and EQUICOR.

Kevin was educated at the University of Michigan, the Kellogg School of Management (MBA), and the Juilliard School.

Tom Emmer
State Representative, State of Minnesota House of Representatives

Representative Emmer has relentlessly represented insurance companies and self-insured entities for almost twenty years. He began his career representing cities and counties through the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust and the League of Minnesota Counties Insurance Trust. Tom received his Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in 1988 and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from University of Alaska-Fairbanks in 1984. Tom has been certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the Minnesota Bar Association. He is licensed to practice law in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Minnesota Law and Politics Magazine has repeatedly named Tom Emmer a “Minnesota Super Lawyer”.

Representative Emmer was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2004 and re-elected by an overwhelming majority in 2006 and 2008. He represents House District 19B which includes: Otsego, Otsego Township, Albertville, Saint Michael, Rockford Township, Rockford, Franklin Township, Delano, Woodland Township, Montrose, Waverly, and Victor Township.

Representative Emmer is a resident of Delano, Minnesota. He has been married to his wife Jacqueline for 24 years, and they are the proud parents of seven children. Tom is active in the community as a member of the Delano Sportsman’s Club, is a Past President of the Delano Area Sports Arena, and is Vice-President of Minnesota Hockey District 5. Tom is also a member of the Delano Catholic Community and the Knights of Columbus.

Pat Geraghty
President & CEO, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota
Patrick Geraghty became president and chief executive officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota in October 2008. He is responsible for the strategy and operations of the state’s largest health plan, serving 2.8 million members, with a full scope of health plan products and services. He is also a member of the Blue Cross board of trustees and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation board.

Prior to joining Blue Cross, Geraghty served as Senior Vice President of the Service Division for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. Geraghty also held several senior leadership positions with Prudential Insurance Company, including President of the Southeast Division; Vice President of Health Plan Operations; and President of the Prudential HealthCare Pharmacy Operations. He has served on the advisory panel of the Deloitte Center for Health Care Solutions, and was on a national Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association committee that reviewed emerging issues in health care.

Geraghty is co-chair of the 2010 Twin Cities Heart Walk benefiting the American Heart Association and is board chair elect for the Minnesota Council of Health Plans. Beginning in August 2009, Geraghty joined the national Jefferson Award Board of Selectors. He is an active member of the Minnesota Business Partnership and is co-chair of the Health Care Innovation Initiative, a CEO-led group working to find quality and cost solutions in health care. He also serves in a variety of other community leadership and volunteer positions. Geraghty has a special interest in health disparities and has served as the chair of the American Conference on Diversity board.

Bill Haas
Owner, Haas Managed Benefits
Bill was elected Mayor of Champlin in 1984 and served for 8 years. As Mayor, he planned and developed the city. In 1994, he was elected and served 10 years in the MN House of Representatives. He served as Vice Chair of Ways & Means for 4 years, Chaired the State Government Finance Committee, Chaired Claims Committee and the Joint Chair of the Committee on Employee Relations. In 2002, Bill passed a healthcare reform bill that rolled back numerous provisions of the 1992 MN Care Law as it relates to small group insurance plans.

Bill began his insurance career in 1971 and in 1993 set up Haas Managed Benefits. He works with small business owners around the state to control the cost of their health insurance. Bill has been a member of MAHU since 1993. He served 4 years as a board member, 3 years on the Legislative Committee and was the 2006 recipient of the John Symanitz Award. Over the years, Bill has served on many committees in his community and school district.

Bill is married, 39 years, and has two grown children and three grandchildren. Bill enjoys creative projects, fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and fly tying. In 1999, Bill and his wife Joenie built a lake home by themselves. The project was featured in Lake Style Magazine.

Phil Hagen, MD
Vice Chair, Mayo Clinic Division of Preventive and Occupational Medicine
Philip Hagen, M.D., is Vice Chair, Mayo Clinic Division of Preventive and Occupational Medicine, and Medical Director, Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth programs.

Dr. Hagen also is an assistant professor in Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and is board certified in internal medicine preventive medicine. Dr. Hagen attended Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education, where he received his M.D. degree in 1983. He completed his residency and fellowship training at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in internal and preventive medicine in 1986 and 1988 respectively, and was appointed to the Mayo Clinic staff in 1988.

Dr. Hagen is a nationally recognized expert in the utilization of computers in health care. For more than a decade, Dr. Hagen has been leading the development of population health management resources addressing risk reduction, lifestyle behavior change, prevention, self-care, and disease management. Dr. Hagen was also involved in the development of Mayo Clinic’s electronic medical record software. He became the medical director for Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth programs because of his interest in helping people make lifestyle changes through health education.

Don Hamm
President & CEO, Assurant Health

Don Hamm became President of Assurant Health in September 2002 and Chief Executive Officer in January 2003. Don has a long history with the company. Starting in 1982, he served as Chief Information Officer while also heading up health operations and the Small Group department. He then worked as a principal with William M. Mercer, a consultant with Tillinghast Towers Perrin and Vice President of the Southeast Region for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wisconsin. He rejoined Assurant Health in 1999 as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

Don has a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science from Drake University and a master’s degree in health care management from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM). He is a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries (FSA), a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) and a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).

Don serves on the Executive Committee of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) and is active in the community, serving on the board of the Boys and Girls Club and the Greater Milwaukee Committee, and as a trustee of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Foundation. He is also an advisory council member of the UWM School of Business and has served as the Co-Chair of the Health Division for the United Way Workplace Giving Campaign from 2006 through 2008.

David Hann
State Senator, Minnesota State Senate
David Hann is serving his second four-year term in the Minnesota State Senate. He is a member of the education finance, health care, agriculture and veterans and the environment and energy committees. He is currently seeking the Republican nomination for Governor.

Prior to his service in the Senate, Hann was elected three times to the Eden Prairie School board where he served as clerk and treasurer. He was also employed at E.A. Sween Co. [Deli Express] for 25 years, where he served in several capacities including Director of Forecasting and Logistics.

While in college, Hann volunteered for the U.S. Army and received the Army Commendation Medal for his service in Vietnam. After returning to the United States, he resumed his education at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN and graduated with a degree in religion. He did graduate work in Theology at the University of Chicago.

Hann was born and raised in Minneapolis and attended Lincoln High School in Bloomington. He is married to Anne and they have four children and one granddaughter.

Tina Kraemer
Product Manager, Medica
Tina Kraemer is manager of product development at Medica responsible for their consumer based products including: value based plan designs, health reimbursement arrangements, health savings accounts, and flexible spending accounts.

She led the development of Definity by Medica and the Medica Direct suite of consumer-directed health products, and was also responsible for the development of the market leading Fit Choices program in 2003.

Ms. Kraemer attended the College of St. Catherine in Minnesota for her B.A. in Marketing and has over 20 years of healthcare, product management and development experience with not-for-profit regional health plans and national provider groups. She is also a licensed Minnesota insurance producer and serves as a member on the Industry Advisory Council of the HSA Coalition in Washington, D.C.

Eugene Sako
Manager, Product Development, PreferredOne

Mr. Sako has had responsibility for PreferredOne’s Product Development efforts since joining the company in June of 2001. Prior to his employment with PreferredOne, Mr. Sako was Director of Sales Planning for Express Scripts Managed Care Division 1999-2001, and prior to that, Director of Product Development at Value Rx 1996-1999. From 1990-1996 he held a variety of managerial positions for PCS HealthSystems in the areas of account service, billing and enrollment, and rebate operations. From 1984-1990 he held the positions of Manager of Underwriting at Aetna Health Plans, Rate Analyst at American MedCenters, and Provider Relations Representative at Med Centers Health Plan. Mr. Sako holds a BA Degree in Biology from the University of Minnesota.

Marty Seifert
State Representative, Minnesota House of Representatives
Representative Marty Seifert was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1996 and re-elected every two years since.

Seifert has served as the House Republican Leader the past three sessions and led a united Republican House Caucus to unanimously uphold each and every veto of Governor Pawlenty this year.

He has also served as the House Majority Whip and Chairman of the State Government Finance Committee, where he ushered through legislation to cut government and give a record increase to Veteran’s programs. It was passed on time and within budget by a large margin.

Seifert has also chief authored legislation to abolish the Profile of Learning, the Woman’s Right to Know Act and many other items to downsize and streamline government.

He lives in Marshall with his wife Traci and children Brittany and Braxton.

Paul Thissen
State Representative, Minnesota House of Representatives

Paul was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2002. Since then, he has demonstrated the ability and a willingness to tackle tough, complex issues and deliver on innovative, practical solutions. After just four years of legislative service, Paul was appointed Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee in 2007. His legislative work has been recognized by numerous community groups and organizations.

Paul is the Chief Author of the Children’s Health Security Act, work that resulted in nearly 40,000 children getting access to health care. He was also instrumental in passing the 2008 Health Reform Act, work the Star Tribune named the “prize” of the 2008 session.

In 2006, Paul was named one of “Forty Under 40” top business professionals in the Twin Cities by the Twin Cities Business Journal. In 2008, Paul was recognized as one of the 100 Influential Minnesotans in Health Care by Physician Magazine and named one of the Twin Cities “Best Brains” in Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine.

Helping clients who could not afford to pay for legal services has been an important professional value to Paul. As Chair of the Briggs and Morgan Pro Bono Committee, Paul redesigned the firm’s community efforts, creating partnerships with local non-profits to better serve their clients.

In the 1990s, Paul founded an innovative program for volunteer lawyers called Access for Persons with Disabilities to increase the availability of legal representation to persons with disabilities in the Twin Cities. Paul has served on numerous community boards and organizations.

Paul and his wife, Karen, were married in 1993. They have three children, Emily, Griffin and Evan.

David Tilford
President & CEO, Medica
David Tilford is President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Medica. He also is a member of the board of directors of Medica Holding Company (MHC), which oversees Medica’s family of businesses including: Medica Health Plans, Medica Health Plans of Wisconsin, Medica Affiliated Services, Medica Insurance Company, Medica Self-Insured, and Medica Health Management, LLC. He joined the company in 2001.

Mr. Tilford has more than 25 years of industry experience, beginning in 1980 with Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Company. He moved on to management and executive positions at Blue Cross of California and was part of the team that guided the formation of WellPoint Health Networks, now the nation’s largest health benefits company. He later led a business/information technology consulting practice serving the insurance and health care industries.

The recognition and awards received by Medica during Mr. Tilford’s leadership include: The national Driving Value in Health Care Award from The Leapfrog Group and National Business Coalition on Health (2006); Two (of three) National Business Coalition on Health eValue8 Innovation awards (2005); and HealthLeaders magazine Top U.S. Health Plan Leadership Team (2004).

John Young
Vice President, Consumerism, CIGNA HealthCare
Mr. John Young is Vice President, Consumerism for CIGNA Healthcare. John serves as a primary resource for driving CIGNA’s consumer driven health strategy through national mid-market sales and service regions.

John has 24 years of employee benefits industry experience, with 8 years devoted to consumer driven healthcare. He was a founder of Consumer Driven Marketing, which served as the mid-market distribution system for Definity Health. Operating as regional director and sales leader, John also served as technical lead for the division. John also served as office head of Great-West Healthcare in Minneapolis as well as their national consumer driven health expert. John also was Vice President of Employee Benefit Consulting divisions of Marsh and Sedgwick Noble Lowndes.

John is a former Executive Board member for Consumers for Health Care Choices, which represents the views of the health care consumer to policy makers and industry leadership. John also served as Chair of the Industry Advisory Committee of the HSA Council.

John received his bachelor’s degree from Bethel University. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of St. Thomas teaching employee benefit courses in their masters program.
